Books can take us anywhere! To any time and place, past, present, or future! They our our window to the world in everyway! Books transmit wisdom from the ages, and sometimes folly too! We can look in on people who lived long ago and faraway! We can thus understand them better, and in many ways have greater insight to who we are, how we got here, and where we are going!
We can learn about almost anything, and always be inspired to know more! We can be instructed, guided, advised, and even admonished! What do you want to know? It is there!
Do you want to travel to the past and feel as if you are there? Do you want to see the present from a multitude of eyes and feel you are not alone? Do you want to imagine the future in a variety of possible scenarios, and maybe dream up your own? It is all there!! There are no limits! Ptck up a book and let the adventure begin!! Whole new worlds await you!!
What do YOU think??

Yes, Larry, there are those of us who love books.
ReplyDeleteFor those who don't, it is like trying to relate our love of pets to those who have never had or wanted a pet; a difficult, if not impossible task.
Rather like you trying to convey your passion for baseball to me. lol Even though I can hear the intensity of your feelings in your voice.. and even respect and apprectiate them.. sports have never been my passion, and I cannot honestly say that I understand.
In this computer age, it is hard to explain that one can take a book anywhere more easily than a computer. No hook-up or wi-fi needed, and no damage done if we drop it when we fall asleep reading in bed ;-)
We can still access the information or entertainment in our book no matter what the state of our tempermental machines, internet service providers, or our particular search engines. Books might sound primitive to the generation who grew up with more time spent on video games and online pursuits, but our old friends are far more dependable and reliable. lol
For those who want to mix both, there are various handheld "readers" now which bridge the gap of technology and books, so that the written word is not lost to the techo generation. These, like conventional books, are portable, convenient, and probably as close to a book (as we old folks know it) that some young people will ever get. There are even applications of these for the higher tech cell phones and those iPad thingys. Whatever it takes!
Reading is fun, and I am all for any means to get more people (especially young ones) to do more of it.
Thank you so much for your very insightful comments Lee! Our passion for books is difficult to convey to a generation who has been connected to media of one sort or another since birth! And yet, I still would want to say 'they don't know what they are missing'. There is something warm and wonderful about a good book on a cold winter night, and something cool and refreshing about an intersting read on a hot sultry night!
ReplyDeletehi Larry, love books, always have, since I was a little child. It fed my imagination and I have a good imagination still :) I love reading about some things like sports, inspirational biographies and stuff. Some things I won't read like horror or cultic stuff. Wish more people would love to read books like we do.
ReplyDeleteThank you Carry! I also started reading books when I was a young child and I still love those books!!
ReplyDeleteI also have never enjoyed horror or stuff about cults!
